What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is a wonderful choice for patients who feel anxious or nervous about their dental treatment. Sedation dentistry involves using a sedative medication to help you feel more relaxed and calm during your dental visit. It’s sometimes referred to as “sleep dentistry,” although that’s not entirely accurate because patients are usually awake. There are several types of sedation dentistry available based on your individual needs and preferences.

Nearly half of the US’s adult population has a dental fear
or dental phobia. Sedation can help.

Why would I use sedation
dentistry?

We, at Rogers Center for Dentistry, provide safe and simple solutions for your dental anxiety. While discussing your medical history, we learn about any dental anxiety and discuss your concerns and fears. We manage anxiety using three methods including conscious sedation, pre-op preparation, and nitrous oxide. To encourage relaxation and provide a comfortable environment, we provide headphones, shaded eyewear, in-ceiling screens, and sterilized blankets when needed.

1. NITROUS OXIDE – Inhaled minimal sedation

Nitrous oxide, otherwise known as “laughing gas,” is combined with oxygen can help you relax during the procedure. The dentist controls the amount of sedation you receive, and the gas tends to wear off quickly. This form of sedation allows you to drive yourself home after the procedure.

2. ORAL sedation.

For minimal sedation, a pill is usually taken about an hour before the procedure. The pill will make you drowsy, yet you will still be awake. A larger dose may be given to produce moderate sedation. You may fall asleep during the procedure, but can usually be awakened with a gentle shake.

3. IV sedation

You receive the sedative drug through a vein, so it goes to work more quickly. You will not remember the procedure. After the procedure, you will be awake but will need to have someone else drive you home.

FAQs

What can sedation dentistry help with?
  • Moderate-to-severe dental anxiety
  • Strong gag reflex
  • Difficulty sitting still for long procedures
  • Fears & worries about discomfort during procedures
Will I really be asleep during the procedure?

With IV sedation, you are not truly “asleep” like you are under general anesthesia, but your level of consciousness is significantly reduced, and you may not remember anything about the dental procedure. Because this solution is delivered directly to your bloodstream, Dr. Rogers can easily control the level of sedation and anesthesia and make any adjustments immediately.

Can I have “laughing gas”?

Of course, you can have laughing gas to relieve your anxiety. Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a nitrogen-oxygen mixture that you inhale through a nose mask during your treatment. As you breathe in the nitrous oxide, you will experience a relaxed or even euphoric sensation. Nitrous oxide can help you feel calm and at ease throughout your treatment. Nitrous oxide sedation is very safe: the effects will wear off within just a few minutes after we remove your nose mask, and you can legally and safely drive yourself home after your appointment. If you feel anxious because you are receiving a treatment you have not experienced before, or if you simply dislike the sounds and sights of the dental office, we may recommend nitrous oxide to help you feel more relaxed. Be sure to discuss your concerns with our dentist and team before your visit so we can help you feel more comfortable during your treatment.
