Tips for Teaching your Kids how to Properly Brush their Teeth

When it comes time to teach your kids how to brush their teeth on their own you will want to make sure they are doing it properly. Improper brushing habits or technique can lead to some nasty cavities. While your child is getting their bi-annual cleaning at Roger’s Center for Dentistry in Spanish Fork, ask your dentist for some tips for proper brushing. Below are some tips to help teach your child how to brush their teeth on their own.

Make it Part of the Routine

Have your child brush his/her teeth at the same times each day. Attach it to other normal tasks like, brushing right before pajamas come off in the morning and as soon as they go on in the evening. Developing the habit of brushing their teeth is important to combat against cavities. This will also give them the practice they need in order to brush properly.

Lead by Example

Your kids will be more willing to brush their teeth properly if they see you doing it as well. Have them observe and brush their teeth with you each morning and night so they can see how it is done. Soon they will be able to go and brush their teeth on their own.

The 2x2min Rule

The common rule to brushing your teeth properly is the 2×2 rule, which means brushing twice a day for at least two minutes. Get them in the habit of thoroughly brushing their teeth each morning and night for at least two minutes. Purchase a 2 minute timer or sing a fun song to help them keep track of how long they are brushing.

Brushing Technique

Show them how to start the brush at a 45-degree angle against the gum line, then clean the front (and back) of each tooth with short, round strokes. Brush the biting/chewing surface of each tooth with short, sweeping strokes. It is also good practice to brush the tongue to remove germs and improve bad breath. Stress the importance of spitting out the remaining toothpaste when finished. Tell them that even though the paste still tastes fruity-yummy, it is now yucky from cleaning off the teeth and needs to go down the drain.
